The Hidden Cost of "I'm Fine" Culture

An inspirational quote about wobbling and continuing, set against an abstract backdrop.

There’s a moment in every workplace, sometimes quiet, sometimes barely noticeable, where someone says “I’m fine” when they’re anything but.

It sounds harmless. Polite. Efficient.

But the cost of that tiny sentence is far bigger than most organisations realise.

Because “I’m fine” isn’t a status update.

It’s a shield.

It’s the mask people wear when they don’t feel safe enough to tell the truth.

And when a team learns to hide its truth, it also learns to hide its needs, its limits, its ideas, and its humanity.

What ‘I’m Fine’ Really Means Inside a Team

  • Unspoken overwhelm - People push through quietly, hoping no one notices the wobble.

  • Shrinking confidence - When struggles stay hidden, self‑trust erodes.

  • Disconnected leadership - Leaders think things are steady; the team feels anything but.

  • Silent burnout - Burnout rarely begins loudly. It begins with silence.

This culture doesn’t break teams overnight.

It breaks them slowly, through the accumulation of unspoken strain.

And here’s the truth many organisations avoid:

People don’t burn out because they’re weak.

They burn out because they’re alone.

“I’m fine” isn’t a sign of strength; it’s a sign that someone no longer feels safe enough to tell the truth.

Why This Matters Now More Than Ever

In a world where everyone is carrying more than they show, psychological safety isn’t a luxury, it’s a lifeline.

Teams need spaces where honesty isn’t punished, where vulnerability isn’t seen as incompetence, and where leaders model humanity instead of perfection.

This is the work I do.

It’s the heart of my talks, my workplace training sessions, and my book Where Dandelions Grow; helping people move from “I’m fine” to “I’m supported.”

Because resilience doesn’t grow in silence.

It grows in connection.

A Quiet Invitation

If your organisation is ready to shift from surface‑level wellbeing to genuine, grounded resilience, I’d love to support you.

Until Next Time

May the conversations you open make it easier for your people to tell the truth, and safer for them to be human at work.

A path through a lush green field, symbolizing a journey or growth.
