Who Are You When You’re No Longer Needed?

An inspirational quote about wobbling and continuing, set against an abstract backdrop.

There is a question that we don’t often ask ourselves.

Not because we don’t want to know the answer…

But perhaps because we’re not sure what it might reveal.

Who are you when you’re no longer needed?

For so much of our lives, we become defined by the roles we hold.

The organiser.

The problem solver.

The person everyone calls when they need help.

The one who remembers the birthdays, sorts the details, keeps everything moving.

And there is something deeply rewarding about being that person.

Being needed feels good.

It gives us purpose.

It tells us we matter.

But what happens when life changes?

When the children grow up.

When the career you built your identity around shifts.

When circumstances mean the role you have always known begins to change.

Who are you then?

I think sometimes we mistake our roles for who we are.

But our roles are only the branches.

They are not the roots.

The roots are the things that remain when everything else changes.

Our kindness.

Our curiosity.

Our values.

Our ability to love.

Our capacity to learn, grow and begin again.

Those things were always there.

They were simply hidden beneath the role we spent so much time fulfilling.

Perhaps resilience is not only about finding strength when life gets difficult.

Perhaps it is also about having the courage to meet ourselves again.

To ask:

What parts of me have been waiting patiently for my attention?

What dreams have I quietly put aside?

What brings me joy when nobody needs anything from me?

What would I choose if I wasn’t trying to be everything for everyone else?

Because you are not only valuable because of what you do.

You are valuable because of who you are.

And sometimes the greatest act of resilience is not becoming someone new.

It is remembering the person who was there all along.

Until Next Time

May you remember that your worth has never been measured by your roles you hold or the things you do for others, but by the person you have always been.

A path through a lush green field, symbolizing a journey or growth.
